Getting Around Essaouira: Transport Guide (Budget)

Here’s the good news about getting around Essaouira: you mostly don’t need to. The medina is compact, the beach is a short walk from anywhere in town, and the main attractions are all within a 20-minute stroll of each other. Your feet are your primary mode of Essaouira transport, and they’re free. But when you do need wheels — for day trips, airport transfers, or tired legs — here’s how the local transport works and what it costs.

For information on getting to Essaouira from other cities, check our complete guide to reaching Essaouira.

Walking: Your Main Transport

Let’s start with the obvious. Essaouira is a walking town, and this is a feature, not a limitation.

  • Medina dimensions: The entire walled medina is roughly 800m x 400m. You can walk from one end to the other in 15-20 minutes.
  • Medina to beach: 5-10 minutes from anywhere in the medina to the main beach entrance.
  • Bus station to medina: About 10-15 minutes on foot from the Supratours/CTM station to Bab Doukkala (the main eastern gate).
  • Medina to port: 5 minutes. The port sits at the northern end of the medina.

The streets inside the medina are narrow, cobblestoned, and car-free (mostly — the occasional motorbike squeezes through). Wear comfortable shoes with some grip. Flip-flops work on the beach but not on the uneven medina streets, especially if it’s rained.

Navigation tip: The medina is laid out on a rough grid pattern — much more organized than Marrakech or Fes. If you get turned around, head toward the sound of the ocean (west) or look for the main drag, Avenue de l’Istiqlal / Avenue Oqba Ibn Nafiaa, which runs roughly north-south through the center. Our medina walking guide has a suggested route.

Petit Taxis (Within Essaouira)

Petit taxis are the small blue taxis you’ll see around town. They operate within Essaouira and are useful for getting from the bus station to your accommodation, or for reaching places slightly outside the medina.

  • Base fare: 5-7 MAD / €0.45-€0.65 (meter starts here)
  • Typical ride within town: 10-20 MAD / €0.90-€1.80
  • Bus station to medina: 10-15 MAD / €0.90-€1.35
  • Medina to south beach area: 10-15 MAD / €0.90-€1.35

Taxi Tips

  • Insist on the meter. Petit taxis in Essaouira should use meters. If the driver refuses, either negotiate a price before getting in or find another taxi. Most drivers are honest.
  • Nighttime supplement. After 8 PM, there’s a 50% surcharge on the meter. This is official, not a scam.
  • Shared rides. Petit taxis can pick up additional passengers heading in the same direction. This is normal and doesn’t affect your fare.
  • Luggage. No extra charge for luggage in petit taxis.
  • Availability. You’ll find taxis near Bab Doukkala, Place Moulay Hassan, and near the bus station. They’re easy to flag on the main roads. Late at night (after midnight), availability drops.

Grand Taxis (Day Trips & Intercity)

Grand taxis are the shared Mercedes sedans that handle longer routes. They’re your transport option for day trips outside Essaouira and for intercity travel.

Common Grand Taxi Routes & Prices

Destination Shared Price (per person) Private Car Price Duration
Sidi Kaouki 15-25 MAD / €1.35-€2.25 100-150 MAD / €9.10-€13.65 20-30 min
Diabat 10-15 MAD / €0.90-€1.35 40-60 MAD / €3.65-€5.45 10 min
Marrakech 80-120 MAD / €7.25-€10.90 500-700 MAD / €45.45-€63.65 2-2.5 hr
Agadir 80-100 MAD / €7.25-€9.10 500-650 MAD / €45.45-€59.10 2.5-3 hr

  • Departure point: Most grand taxis leave from the stand near Bab Doukkala, on the eastern edge of the medina.
  • Shared taxis wait until full. A grand taxi seats 6 passengers (3 in front, 3 in back). The taxi doesn’t leave until all seats are filled. This can take 10 minutes or over an hour depending on the route and time of day.
  • Private hire: You can buy all 6 seats to leave immediately. This costs roughly 6x the per-person price but saves waiting time. Useful for groups or if you’re in a hurry.
  • No fixed schedule. Grand taxis run on demand, not on a timetable. Morning departures (9-11 AM) fill fastest.

Bicycle Rental

Cycling is a great way to explore the area around Essaouira, especially for reaching the beach areas south of town or making a day trip to Sidi Kaouki or Diabat.

  • Rental cost: 80-150 MAD / €7.25-€13.65 per day
  • Where to rent: Several shops in the medina near Bab Doukkala and along Avenue de l’Istiqlal rent basic mountain bikes or city bikes.
  • Quality: Variable. Check the brakes, tires, and chain before riding. Most rental bikes are basic but functional.
  • Deposit: Some shops ask for a passport or cash deposit (200-500 MAD). Leave a photocopy of your passport instead if possible.

Best Cycling Routes

  • Essaouira to Diabat: 5 km, flat road, 15-20 minutes. Easy and scenic.
  • Essaouira to Sidi Kaouki: 25 km, mostly flat with gentle hills, 1-1.5 hours. Be warned — the headwind on the return (northbound) can be exhausting, especially in summer when the alizee winds blow hard.
  • Along the beach road: The road running parallel to the coast south of the medina is flat and quiet, good for a casual ride with ocean views.

Wind warning: Essaouira’s winds are notorious. If you’re cycling south, the outward journey (with the wind) feels easy. The return trip (into the wind) can take twice as long and wear you out. Check the wind conditions before committing to a long ride.

Quad Bikes & Buggies

Several operators offer quad bike or buggy excursions into the dunes and countryside around Essaouira. These are popular half-day activities rather than practical transport, but they’re worth mentioning:

  • 2-hour quad bike tour: 400-600 MAD / €36.35-€54.55 per person
  • Half-day buggy excursion: 600-900 MAD / €54.55-€81.80 per person
  • Routes: Typically head south through dunes, along the coast, and through argan forest

Car Rental

Renting a car isn’t necessary for staying in Essaouira, but it’s useful if you want to explore the coast independently or continue to other destinations.

  • Daily rate: 200-400 MAD / €18.20-€36.35 for a basic car (Dacia Logan, Renault Clio)
  • Where to rent: A few agencies near Bab Doukkala and along the road to the bus station. Booking online in advance usually gets better rates.
  • Parking: Free parking is available outside the medina walls, near the bus station, and along the beach road. A supervised parking lot near Bab Doukkala costs about 10-20 MAD / €0.90-€1.80 per day.
  • Driving in the medina: Don’t. The streets are too narrow and mostly pedestrianized. Park outside and walk in.

Getting to the Beaches

Different beaches require different transport approaches:

Main Beach (Essaouira Beach)

Walk. It’s a 5-10 minute walk from anywhere in the medina. No transport needed. See our beach guide for details on what to expect.

Diabat Beach / South Beach

Walk along the main beach heading south. It takes about 45-60 minutes from the medina to reach Diabat. Alternatively, take a petit taxi to the road entrance of Diabat for about 20-30 MAD / €1.80-€2.70.

Sidi Kaouki Beach

Grand taxi from Bab Doukkala (15-25 MAD / €1.35-€2.25 shared, 20-30 minutes). This is the best surf beach near Essaouira. Our Sidi Kaouki guide has full details on getting there and back.

Moulay Bouzerktoun

A popular kitesurf spot about 20 km north of Essaouira. Grand taxi costs about 20-30 MAD / €1.80-€2.70 per person shared. Some kitesurf schools include transport in their lesson price.

Airport Transfers

Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU) is about 16 km from the city center. Here’s how to get between the airport and town:

  • Taxi: 100-150 MAD / €9.10-€13.65 for the whole car. Negotiate the price before getting in. Some drivers ask 200 MAD — this is too much.
  • Pre-booked transfer: 120-180 MAD / €10.90-€16.35. Your accommodation can usually arrange this. Convenient if you’re arriving at odd hours. [BOOKING_LINK]
  • No public bus: There’s no regular bus service between the airport and the city center. A taxi is your only realistic option.

Tip: If you’re arriving on a budget flight, have your accommodation arrange a pickup. The drivers meeting flights at the airport tend to charge more than taxis you’d find in town.
